Friends of Misery Bay

Seeking Two (2) Park Naturalists

Are you passionate about Manitoulin’s natural and human history?  Are you someone who enjoys communicating with people and sharing your knowledge and passion?  We want to hear from you!

Misery Bay Provincial Park, located outside of Evansville, is a Nature Reserve class park within the Ontario Parks system. The Friends of Misery Bay are looking for two passionate people to join us this summer as Park Naturalists to help visitors experience the best of what Misery Bay Provincial Park has to offer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Staff the Visitor’s Centre

Interact with the public through formal and impromptu educational programming such as staff-led guided hikes, interactions with visitors at the centre, developing activities to encourage participation by children

Create content for Friends of Misery Bay social media accounts

Represent the Friends of Misery Bay and Misery Bay Provincial Park at community events

Interact with volunteers and Ontario Parks staff

Required Skills and Attributes:

Passionate about conserving and sharing nature with the public

Willingness to learn and follow protocols

Flexible, reliable, and able to work well in a team environment

Comfortable working remotely and self motivated to work independently

Excellent organizational skills

Proficient with social media platforms

Moderate physical work may be required

Valid class “G” driver’s licence and access to a vehicle OR access to transportation to and from work

The following additional skills and abilities would be assets, but are not required to apply:

Basic knowledge of plants, wildlife and vegetation communities

Navigational skills including GPS devices

Standard First Aid-Level C CPR or higher

Terms of Employment:

These positions are up to 19 weeks full-time May/June to September, with possible part-time digital involvement after that time

Compensation to be discussed

The positions will require some weekend work

The positions are funded using a federal wage subsidy program which requires the applicants meet the following criteria:

Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period

Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and

Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
