ICAN INDEPENDENCE CENTRE AND NETWORK

 

ICAN is a community based non-profit organization providing services and resources to persons living with permanent physical disabilities, persons living post-stroke and older adults. ICAN provides assistance to live independently and inclusively in the community through individualized support and rehabilitation services.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

ILA’s provide support and assistance to individuals living with permanent physical disabilities as well as older adults/seniors with health challenges.  Their role is to help clients with daily activities such as personal care, meal preparation, housekeeping, and mobility assistance.

ILA’s work closely with individuals to promote self-sufficiency and ensure that they can maintain as much independence as possible while living in either their own homes or our supportive housing units. 

By empowering clients to live independently, ILA’s play a crucial role in fostering dignity, autonomy, and inclusion for people with diverse needs.

 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Personal hygiene.

·         Bowel/bladder care.

·         Rising and retiring.

·         Dressing/undressing.

·         Meal preparation and eating.

·         Bathing/showering.

·         Transferring/repositioning.

·        Light house cleaning.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Post-secondary education in a Health-related field or PSW Certificate

·         Experience working with people with physical disabilities or in a long-term care setting preferred

·         Ability to meet the scheduling requirements of the position, which entails working both   afternoons and dayshifts (including every second weekend)

·        Able to function cooperatively in a multi-disciplinary environment

·        Ability to communicate through spoken word and write in a clear and understandable manner.

·         ILAs in Outreach must provide their own transportation as work is in the community

·         Bilingualism is an asset

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

·         May be required to work a variety of shifts and variable hours.

·         May be required in multiple departments.

·         Working as a member of a team in the performance of some duties.

·         Some of the work and duties may change occasionally, and other duties may be assigned.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

·   The job requires heavy and repetitive physical work as specified in the organization’s physical demands analysis for the ILA position

·   Manual dexterity – to operate client equipment for transfers, lifts, wheelchairs, etc.
