Course Instructors – Social Service Worker Diploma Program

COURSE TITLES – Interpersonal Relations, Social Service Work Interviewing I, SSW Methods: Community Organization, Group Work for Human Services

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

If you’re passionate about helping others and creating positive change, the Social Service Worker program in partnership with FNTI offers an Indigenous-centered approach to social work education. Learners gain the knowledge and skills to support individuals and communities through themes of social justice, empowerment, and ethics. Grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, the program emphasizes personal growth, community development, communication, and counselling skills – preparing you for a rewarding career in human services.

COURSE OVERVIEW

HUM 100 – Interpersonal Relations
This course provides students with opportunities to deepen their awareness and understanding of the critical factors involved in interpersonal relationships. Students will aim to increase their communication skills and enhance their understanding of various behaviours in interpersonal situations.

SSW 105 – Social Service Work Interviewing I
This course introduces the principles, methods, and purposes of intentional interviewing as applied to human service counselling. Students will learn how to establish a helping relationship while practicing observational and listening skills, and how to influence and structure an effective interview.

SSW 103 – SSW Methods: Community Organization
The aim of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the basic concepts and theories used in community organization. Community Service learning is incorporated, where students will implement a community awareness project and a fundraising project.

SSW 219 – Group Work for Human Services
This course introduces students to the principles and practices of group work within a human service context. Emphasizing inclusive and anti-oppressive approaches, students will explore group dynamics, stages of group development, and the facilitator’s role. Through theoretical learning and practical application, students will develop skills in planning, facilitating, and evaluating group interventions, with a focus on diversity, ethical practice, and effective documentation.
