Summary
The ABWnG Student Support Specialist will work closely with one or two students who require additional support in the classroom. This role focuses on fostering a positive learning experience by addressing the student’s individual needs. The Student Support Specialist will promote self-confidence, enhance emotional well-being, and support educational outcomes. The ABWnG Developmental Therapist Clinical Supervisor will supervise this position and collaborate closely
with classroom teachers and other educational staff.
Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one support to students with special educational needs enrolled with ABWnG Developmental
Therapy services.
Assist the Teacher and Special Education Resource Teacher in implementing personalized learning plans to meet
students’ needs.
Assist other ABWnG services with implementing recommendations in the Student.
Facilitate the students’ integration into Student activities and social groups.
Monitor and report on students’ progress, utilizing the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
Offer positive reinforcement to boost students’ self-esteem and encourage appropriate behavior.
Ensure the safety and well-being of the students at all times.
Participate in regular meetings with ABWnG Developmental Therapist Clinical Supervisor, Developmental Therapist,
and Care Coordinators to discuss cases and refine intervention strategies.
Engage in cultural competence training and deliver culturally sensitive services.
Apply best practices in social skills development, self-esteem building, anger management, and impulse control.
Document daily activities and assist with detailed reports as required.
Adhere to school policies, procedures, and best practices.
Qualifications
o College Diploma or Degree in Developmental Service Worker, Child and Youth Worker, or equivalent/combination of
education or work experience.
o Experience working with children/youth experiencing social/emotional difficulties
o Demonstrated ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team
o Commitment to community-based services.
o Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
o Computer literacy is required, including practical working skills in MS Word and e-mail.
o Able to deal with people professionally.
o Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse environment.
o Able to work efficiently as part of a team and independently.
o Good organizational, time management, and prioritizing skills.
o Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to staff privacy.
o Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture is an asset
o This position involves travel to schools with the board, and therefore, the successful candidate must have a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license
