NAANDWECHIGE-GAMIG – Wikwemikong Health Centre Child Well Being Worker – CPNP, FASD, AHOSR

Improve health of mother and infants through nutrition screening, maternal nourishment, breastfeeding promotion and supporting activities.

1. Encourages and provides prenatal education encouraging healthy choices for infant and mother’s wellness in the four areas of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual care; can be done through one on one supports, group supports, resources and outreach including prenatal home visits
2. Coordinates and provides “Prenatal” Classes on a quarterly basis to encourage and promote important prenatal/postnatal topics and issues; with the use of Western and traditional approaches
3. Educate Prenatal Moms with respect to health status issues, including medical follow-up, physical health and nutritional intake;
4. Collaborate with Prenatal Mothers to establish pre and postnatal development goals and document this collaborative process with Service Plans;
5. Encourages healthy prenatal nutrition and infant nutrition through basic nutrition information provision, screenings, referrals to community dietician, Prenatal and Postnatal Food Vouchers and regular programming;
6. Provision of Prenatal/Postnatal Food Vouchers to expectant /breastfeeding mothers to encourage healthier food purchases, leading to healthy nutrition. Also encourages ongoing contact with mothers and their families;
7. Encourages and provides ongoing breastfeeding education and support in both the prenatal and postnatal periods; promote and provide breastfeeding support;
8. Coordinates and provides “EZ Cooking” Classes on a quarterly basis to encourage healthier meal preparation and nutrition awareness to families;
9. Coordinates and provides “Baby Food Making” Classes on a regular basis to encourage and promote the benefits of preparing and storing baby food at home as opposed to purchasing store bought products;
10. Encourages and coordinates cultural programming, and use of cultural resources with support of Elders;
11. Family case management and service coordination for families with infants and young children; knowledge of infant care and family development is an asset.
12. Encouraged to understand and support families dealing with high risk situations; includes understanding of perinatal mental health issues, addictions, trauma informed care, families with child welfare concerns, and issues related to poverty.
13. An understanding of First Nations issues related to family dysfunction and family violence in relation to intergenerational trauma is encouraged.
14. Administer developmental screens at appropriate intervals to children on assigned caseload;
15. Complete documentation of home visits, socialization experiences and other relevant activities;
16. Maintain confidentiality of family records and information;
17. To ensure programming and event planning are consistent with approved budget allowances.

 Post-Secondary Diploma in Health or Social Services;
 Prior work experience in servicing children and families;
 2 years of work experience in the health and/or social service field;
 Experience as a parent is a requirement for the position;
 Prior work experience with families in a human service setting;
 Capacity to problem solve, handle crisis and work with families and children;
 Approach to working with families that is empathic, non-judgmental, respectful and professional;
 Willingness to work primarily in the home of families;
 Must be knowledgeable in area of preconception, pregnancy, labor & delivery, breastfeeding and early childhood;
