The Communications Officer is responsible for developing and implementing effective communication strategies that promote the First Nation’s vision, values, and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and execute a comprehensive communications plan that aligns with the First Nation’s strategic goals. Produce high-quality content for various channels, including press releases, website articles, social media posts, newsletters, and presentations. Build and maintain positive relationships with media outlets, respond to media inquiries, and facilitate media events. Foster open communication with community members through various channels, including community meetings, surveys, and online forums. Develop and implement internal communication strategies to keep staff informed and engaged. Ensure consistent application of the First Nation’s brand guidelines across all communication materials.
Qualifications:
Post-secondary degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years experience in a communications or public relations role, preferably in a First Nation or Indigenous organization.
Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Proficiency in various communication tools and software. Knowledge of First Nations culture, protocols, and issues. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Assets:
Fluency in the Anishinaabemowin. Experience working with First Nations media.
Knowledge of graphic design and video editing software.
