Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Farm Helper to join our team at The Ugly Barn farm. As a Farm Helper, you will play a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of our farm,
ensuring the production of high-quality mushrooms. This is a hands-on position that requires physical labor and a passion for agriculture. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively both as an individual and in a
team-oriented environment. A valid driver’s license, a personal vehicle and residing within 50km of The Ugly Barn Farm are strong assets.
Responsibilities:
1. Mushroom Cultivation Support:
• Assist in the cultivation process of mushrooms, including cleaning and preparing growing areas, sterilizing equipment, and preparing mushroom substrates.
• Monitor and maintain optimal environmental conditions for mushroom growth, such as temperature, humidity, and lighting.
• Harvest mature mushrooms based on their growth cycle and ensure careful handling to maintain quality.
2. Farm Maintenance:
• Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning and sanitizing growing areas, equipment, and tools.
• Monitor and control pests and diseases by implementing appropriate control measures.
• Conduct regular inspections to identify any issues or maintenance requirements and report them to the supervisor.
3. Inventory Management:
• Assist in inventory management by monitoring and tracking supplies, materials, and tools used in mushroom cultivation.
• Ensure proper storage and organization of supplies to maintain their quality and usability.
• Communicate inventory needs, to the supervisor to ensure timely restocking.
4. Quality Control:
• Follow established quality control procedures to ensure mushrooms meet industry standards for appearance, size, and freshness.
• Son and package mushrooms based on quality and specifications, adhering to hygiene and safety protocols.
• Collaborate with the team to implement quality improvement initiatives and provide feedback on product quality.
5. Farm Operations Support:
• Assist in general farm operations, such as loading and unloading deliveries, maintaining farm equipment, and managing waste disposal.
• Participate in planting and harvesting activities as required.
• Support the implementation of farm safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
6. Other tasks as assigned by the farm manager.
Qualifications:
• Previous experience in agriculture or farm-related work is desirable but not mandatory.
• Physical fitness (able to lift 5Olbs) and the ability to perform manual labor tasks in varying
• weather conditions.
Able to stand for extended periods, kneeling, crouching, and of course crab walking.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
• Basic knowledge of fungi biology, pest control, and food safety practices is
• advantageous.
Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and technologies in mushroom farming.

Requirements:
This position is in part funded by the federal government and the following is required to meet program requirements
Be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of the job
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status
Be legally allowed to work in Canada (this includes having a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN))
Start date: June 29, 2026, until August 29, 2026, the possibility of an earlier start date.
30 hours per week
Rate of pay: $18/hour + vacation pay
