Whitefish River First Nation

The Field Technician plays a crucial role in a variety of ongoing WRFN Lands projects. This position involves working on the land, reporting activities on the land, and sometimes working in adverse weather conditions. *This position will primarily work outdoors.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Keep the Lands Officer and Lands Manager apprised of all activities.
• Participate in training courses and professional development.
• Assist with our ongoing Walleye Project and play a significant role in enhancing our Rearing Pond
Program.
• Assist in completing Aerial Surveys of our Leased Lots and our new Land Selection Areas.
• Assist with our Additions to Reserve Project and the cleanup of railway ties.
• Assist with Environmental Monitoring programs here in WRFN, including new projects and shoreline assessments of the Bay of Islands and McGregor Bay.
• Assist lands officer with environmental site inspection for land allotments and leased lots.
• Accompany 3rd party while working within WRFN territory.
• Maintain field equipment. Develop inventory and needs.
• Enhance our existing GIS database.
• Other duties as requested
QUALIFICATIONS:
▪ Must be a member of Whitefish River First Nation.
▪ Work experience or education in an environmental-related science would be an asset.
▪ Must have a complete “G” Driver’s license and access to own vehicle.
▪ A pleasure craft license and experience driving a boat would be an asset.
▪ Basic Computer and Data Management skills are required.
▪ Animal and Plant Identification skills or willingness to learn and research is required.
▪ Experience flying a drone would be an asset, or the willingness to learn.
OTHER SKILLS:
Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and language (or willingness to learn).
Excellent problem-solving, multi-tasking, and collaborative skills.
Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Able to work in inclement weather.
